Prostate cancer
Prostate cancer (Public Health Agency of Canada) is abnormal cell growth causing a tumour in the prostate (a gland below the bladder in men). It is the most common cancer in Canadian men. There are many different risk factors that may increase the chances of developing this type of cancer.
Prostate cancer by geographic area
Key findings:
- In the Sudbury & District Health Unit (SDHU) area, there were 135 new cases of prostate cancer in 2009.
- In 2009, the rate of prostate cancer was 103 cases per 100,000 men.
- The rate of prostate cancer in the SDHU area has generally been lower than that of northeastern Ontario, and the rates in both the SDHU area and northeastern Ontario have generally been lower than that of Ontario.
- In general, the rate of prostate cancer in the SDHU area has decreased between 2000 and 2009.
Notes:
- Rates are age-standardized using the 1991 Canadian population.

Prostate cancer by Greater Sudbury and outlying areas
Key findings:
- In 2009, there were 104 new cases of prostate cancer among residents of Greater Sudbury and 31 new cases among residents of the SDHU district office areas.
- The rate of prostate cancer was 101 new cases per 100,000 men residing in Greater Sudbury and 111 new cases per 100,000 men residing in the SDHU district office areas. Due to small numbers, the rates reported for the SDHU district office areas should be interpreted with caution.
- The rate of prostate cancer among residents of Greater Sudbury was generally lower than the rate among residents of the SDHU district office areas, despite fluctuations.
- Between 2000 and 2009, the rate of prostate cancer among residents of Greater Sudbury generally decreased, while the rate among residents of the SDHU district office areas has fluctuated with no clear trend.

Prostate cancer by age group
Key findings:
- In the SDHU area, the highest number of prostate cancer cases was in the 65 to 74 age group, with 48 cases in 2009. There were fewer than 6 new cases per year among people aged 0–44 years. Results therefore cannot be reported for this age group.
- In 2009, the highest rate of prostate cancer was in the 75 and over age group, with a rate of 708 cases per 100,000 men.
- The rate of prostate cancer increases with age, with the highest rates found in individuals 65 and over.
- Between 2000 and 2009, the prostate cancer rates in the SDHU area generally decreased in those 65 and over.

Key findings:
- In the SDHU area, there were 35 deaths due to prostate cancer in 2009.
- In 2009, the prostate cancer mortality rate in the SDHU area was 29 deaths per 100,000 males. Due to small numbers, the rates report for the SDHU area should be interpreted with caution.
- In general, the prostate cancer mortality rate in the SDHU area and northeastern Ontario have been similar, and are slightly higher than the rate in Ontario.
- Between 2000 and 2009, the prostate cancer rate in the SDHU area has been fairly stable.
