Indigenous Population
This section profiles the Indigenous* population in terms of geographic distribution, Indigenous identity, and on-reserve residence. Indigenous people are those persons who reported identifying with at least one Indigenous group (North American Indian, Métis, or Inuit) and/or those who reported being a Registered or Treaty Indian (that is, registered under the Indian Act of Canada) and/or being a member of a First Nation or Indian Band.
Note* The term “Indigenous” was recently adopted by the Public Health Sudbury & Districts to describe First Nation, Metis, and Inuit people of Canada. The term “Aboriginal” was used by Statistics Canada during the 2016 census and respondents would have self-identified as such.
Highlights
- Within Sudbury and districts, those who identified as Indigenous people represented a larger proportion of the population (13%) compared to Ontario overall (3%). In Manitoulin District, those who identified as Indigenous people represented well over one-third (41%) of the population followed by 18% in Sudbury District and 10% in Greater Sudbury.
