Families and Households
This section describes the family types, number and age groups of children living at home, and the distribution of private households by the size of the household for the Sudbury & Districts and Ontario.
Census family types
Highlights
- In the Sudbury & Districts and Ontario, 17% of families were led by a single parent.
- The majority of single parent families were led by females; 77% in the Sudbury & Districts and 80% in Ontario.

Census families with children
Highlights
- In the Sudbury & Districts, there were approximately 31,410 census families with children living at home in 2016.
- From 2011 to 2016, the percentage of census families with children aged 25 or older only living at home has gone from 14% to 15% in the Sudbury & Districts. (data not shown)
- In the Sudbury District in particular, the number of census families who have only children aged 25 or older living at home has risen from 15% to 17%. In Ontario, the same increase was seen.

Private households – number of persons
Highlights
- Across the Sudbury & Districts, two-person households comprised the largest proportion (38%) of private households, followed by one-person households (29%). This pattern held true provincially as well.
