Work Location Arrangement: Mostly Remote – The position is mostly remote work along with infrequent on-site attendance on a weekly basis as determined by management (i.e., in-person meetings, training, or other functions).
Salary: $41.50 – $48.24/hour (per CUPE collective agreement)
Position summary:
We are currently seeking a highly motivated health professional to contribute to our organizational mission of working with our local communities to promote and protect health and to prevent disease for everyone.
Reporting to the Manager, Health Equity, the Health Promoter is an integral member of a multidisciplinary team. The incumbent will have a deep understanding of anti-racist and anti-oppressive practices and will contribute to the planning, development, and implementation of the agency’s Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility (EDIA) initiatives, the Racial Equity Action Framework, and other health equity activities.
This will be done by collaborating with staff, community members and partners. Also, by researching, planning, developing, coordinating, and evaluating public health activities and interventions in accordance with agency policy and the Ontario Public Health Standards.
Responsibilities:
- In keeping with the organization’s strategic priorities and the Ontario Public Health Standards, the Health Promoter develops and fosters relationships that increase confidence and trust with members of racialized communities.
- Uses health equity principles and practices to inform policy and program planning across the organization in order to address equity of access, quality, and outcomes for racialized community members.
- Develops, plans, implements, coordinates, and evaluates projects and activities in consultation with the supervisor and other team members as required.
- Supports programs to emphasize population health, the promotion of health, and community involvement to meet local needs and the Ontario Public Health Standards, in particular emphasizing the Health Equity Foundational Standard.
- Engages in collaborative processes to better understand the strengths and needs relative to racialized, newcomer, and other equity seeking community members and stakeholders in order to reduce health inequities.
- Implements appropriate health promotion interventions utilizing skills in social marketing, media communications, innovation, intersectoral planning, community relationships (i.e. networks and coalitions), community capacity building, co-design and engagement, and provides consultation specific to health promotion programming. using a variety of theories (e.g. behaviour change theory, and social marketing).
- Engages in community development initiatives with internal staff members as well as external partners, agencies, and community members to improve overall health status and to reduce health inequities.
- Acts as a resource person by responding to internal and community requests for information as appropriate.
- Facilitates the establishment of public health policies through advocacy, negotiation, writing and presenting resolutions and position papers, research and analysis of policy options, drafting policy recommendations and assisting with implementation.
- Maintains current knowledge of the literature and best practices and critically appraises evidence to assist with priority setting, program targeting and determination of public health strategies.
- Collects, synthesizes and analyses data and information to support evidence-informed decision-making, planning, and policy analysis.
- Contributes to the development of program plans, logic models, activity plans and monitoring and evaluation plans by providing latest evidence and best practices.
- Initiates, conducts, promotes, presents, and participates in collaborative research or evaluation projects with relevant internal and external partners.
Requirements:
- Master’s degree in health promotion, public health, or other relevant field such as social work, gender, race and ethnicity studies, social justice, Indigenous studies, and equity studies. Equivalent education/training ensuring a population or public health focus may also be considered.
- Minimum 2 years experience in public health, health promotion, or community health with proficiency in a combination of the following areas: research methods, program evaluation, policy development, group facilitation techniques, public speaking and presentation, principles of population health, community development, social marketing and media communication strategies.
- Experience working with underserved populations.
- Demonstrated expertise regarding determinants of health and health equity; and change management.
- Demonstrated computer skills with Microsoft office and relevant data bases.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team and independently as an integral team member.
- Passion for and demonstrated commitment to equity, social justice and anti-racist/anti-oppressive practices.
- Strong understanding of the impacts of systemic racism on individual, community and public health.
- Familiarity with the structure and history of racialized and Indigenous communities within the area served by Public Health Sudbury & Districts and beyond.
- Lived experience as a self-identified visible minority or racialized community member is required.
- Strong ability to analyse, interpret and apply data.
- Good communication (verbal and written), knowledge translation, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
- Advanced oral and written proficiency in English is required.
- Advanced oral and written proficiency in French is required.
