Amoxicillin
What is amoxicillin?
Amoxicillin is used as an alternate treatment for an individual who is pregnant or breastfeeding, or has allergies to the other chlamydia treatments, and who:
- Has a confirmed case of chlamydia.
- Is a sexual partner of someone with chlamydia.
- Is suspected to have chlamydia.
Amoxicillin is taken orally for 7 days.
What are special instructions for amoxicillin?
- Do not have sex until both you and your partner have received and completed the treatment. This includes oral sex.
- Amoxicillin may reduce the effectiveness of the birth control pill. A condom and spermicide should be used for the rest of the current package of birth control pills.
- Do not drink alcohol until you have completed the treatment.
- It is important to take all of the medication given to you, even if your symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication may cause the infection to return.
- It is recommended that you be re-tested 3 to 4 weeks after finishing your prescription to make sure that the infection is gone.
What are the possible side effects of amoxicillin?
- nausea, vomiting, upset stomach
- diarrhea
- loss of appetite
