What is a male condom?
A thin covering, usually made of latex, worn over an erect penis used to prevent sexually transmitted infections including HIV, pregnancy or both.
How does a male condom work?
The condom catches the semen that contains sperm and prevents it from entering the other person’s body. A condom can be used for anal, vaginal or oral sex.
How effective is a condom at preventing pregnancy?
Male condoms are 85 to 97% effective when they are used correctly.
What are the possible side effects?
- Irritation caused by latex. If this occurs a non-latex condom can be used.
What are the advantages of using a male condom?

What are the disadvantages of using a male condom?
- You must put it on right before you have sex, every time.
- Your partner’s penis must be fully erect to put one on.
- Your partner must be willing to wear one.
- Condoms have expiry dates.
- Condoms may break or fall off if not used correctly.
Female Condom
What is a female condom?
A loose fitting, non-latex pouch that is inserted into the vagina up to 4 hours before vaginal sex.
How does a female condom work?
The female condom catches the semen that contains the sperm and prevents it from entering the vagina.
How effective is a female condom?
The female condom will prevent an unplanned pregnancy 79 to 80% of the time.
What are the possible side effects?

What are the advantages of using a female condom?
- It provides protection against STIs.
- You only need to use it when you have sex.
- You don’t need a prescription.
- There are no side effects.
- It doesn’t affect your ability to get pregnant in the future.
What are the disadvantages of using a female condom?
- You have to insert it right before you have sex, every time.
- It can get pushed inside the vagina during intercourse so it must be checked periodically.
