Preventing vaginal infections
Vaginal infections include bacterial vaginosis and candida (yeast) infections. Proper vaginal skin care is important to reduce your chance of getting a vaginal infection.
Things to avoid
- bubble baths, feminine hygiene sprays, feminine hygiene and baby wipes, perfumed tampons, perfumed talcum powders, scented oils, lotions, petroleum jelly and coloured toilet paper
- using soap directly on the vaginal skin, as it may cause irritation
- do not scrub vaginal skin with a washcloth
- underwear and tight clothing made of synthetic materials, such as lycra and nylon
- scented detergents and fabric softeners when washing and drying clothes that come into contact with vaginal skin (towels, underwear, exercise clothes, and pyjama bottoms)
- do not douche unless medically advised
- use caution with specialty and flavoured condoms and lubricants
Preventing vaginal infections and irritations
- wash with warm water and your hand to keep the vaginal area clean
- if you use soap, use a mild, unscented and hypoallergenic soap and rinse well
- use white, unscented toilet paper and pat dry rather than rubbing the skin
- soak in lukewarm bath water with four to five tablespoons of baking soda to help soothe itching and burning
- wear white cotton underwear
- remove wet bathing suits and exercise clothes as soon as possible
- use scent-free laundry detergent and avoid using fabric softener on clothes that come into contact with the vaginal area
- rest and good nutrition are important in maintaining strong resistance to infection
