Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that affects both men and women, although symptoms are more common in women.
Symptoms may appear 5 to 28 days after contact, with the average being 7 days. Many people have no symptoms and may infect others during sex without knowing it.
Women may experience:
- vaginal odour
- painful or frequent urination
- itching and irritation of the genital area
- frothy, off-white or yellowish-green vaginal discharge
- pain during sexual intercourse
Men may experience:
- slight discharge from the penis
- burning sensation while urinating
- irritation and redness of the penis head
Swabs are taken from the woman’s vagina or the man’s penis.
The infection is commonly treated with the medication Metronidazole. Treatment is also recommended for your recent partner(s).
