Reduction of Child Poverty (Motion #62-06)

Motion

WHEREAS prenatal and early childhood experiences have a profound effect on health and well-being in later life; and

WHEREAS there is increasing evidence that, as compared with other children, children living in poverty have worse health outcomes; and

WHEREAS the Sudbury & District Board of Health is mandated to promote the health of children, youth and families; and

WHEREAS the Sudbury & District Board of Health has demonstrated a long history of strong advocacy in support of work on the determinants of health and on children’s health; and

WHEREAS in June 2003, the Sudbury & District Board of Health motion #53-03 adopted the Children’s First Charter; and

WHEREAS in May 2005, the Sudbury & District Board of Health motion #41‑05, endorsed the Determinants of Health Position Statement; and WHEREAS in October 2005, the Sudbury & District Board of Health motion #73-05 supported equity-based planning for public health programs and services;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the resolution of the Board of Health for Toronto Public Health respecting the impact of poverty on children’s health  be endorsed by the Sudbury & District Board of Health; and

FURTHER THAT the Prime Minister of Canada, Ministers of Finance and Health, Chief Public Health Officer of Canada, Members of Parliament and Members of Provincial Parliament for Sudbury and districts, Premier of Ontario, Ontario Ministers of Health and Long Term Care, Health Promotion, Finance and Children and Youth Services, the Ontario Chief Medical Officer of Health, the Ontario Public Health Association (OPHA), the Association of Local Public Health Agencies (alPHa), constituent municipalities and all Ontario boards of health be so advised.
