Motion
WHEREAS the Sudbury & District Board of Health plays an essential role in fostering healthy communities and has under motion #41-05 endorsed the Public Health and Determinants of Health Position Statement; and
WHEREAS food security is a key determinant of health, a prerequisite for healthy eating and fundamental to human and environmental health and
WHEREAS as compared with the 2005 pricing survey, the cost of healthy eating in the Sudbury and Manitoulin districts has increased 8.7%; and
WHEREAS in June 2004, the Sudbury & District Board of Health motion #65-04 endorsed the City of Greater Sudbury Food Charter, a key tool to improving community food security; and
WHEREAS under motion #53-02, the Sudbury & District Board of Health advocated to the Premier and his Ministers that the provincial government ensure adequate social assistance funding to ensure that people can achieve a nutritious diet and other basic prerequisites for health, and that food security be addressed along with the other important public health determinants;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Sudbury & District Board of Health further its support for the City of Greater Sudbury Food Charter by requesting that the Premier take action to ensure adequate social assistance rates, adequate minimum wage rates and affordable, quality childcare; and
FURTHER THAT the Sudbury & District Board of Health continue to support the operation and development of community food security initiatives, such as community kitchens, community gardens and the Good Food Box program, and a regional food system; and
FURTHER THAT the Sudbury & District Board of Health share the “Nutritious Food Basket: The Cost of Eating Well Report 2006” with appropriate community agencies, Mayors and Councils in the City of Greater Sudbury and districts with the request that they explore community food security initiatives.
