Postpartum depression in partners
It is also natural for partners to experience a wide range of emotions after the arrival of their new baby. Postpartum depression can occur in 10.4% of partners.
This incidence of depression increases up to 50% in partners when the mother has Perinatal Mood Disorders (PMD). Typically, the partner’s symptoms of PMD occurs later in the postpartum period where as the mother’s symptoms are exhibited earlier in the postpartum period.
Some symptoms in partners may include:
- easily stressed
- increased frustration or anger
- increased risk-taking behaviours
- feeling discouraged
- physical symptoms such as headaches
- aches or pains
- weight loss
- loss of interest
- lack of motivation
- become isolated
