School Immunization Coverage
Public Health Sudbury & Districts is required under the Ontario government’s Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA) to collect and maintain up-to-date immunization records for every student registered in school in our jurisdiction. High immunization rates in schools help to keep students safe by preventing outbreaks. Learn more about immunization records and reporting and vaccines.
2018 to 2019 school year
- overall immunization coverage rates are high for schools in our jurisdiction
- overall coverage rate for diphtheria, tetanus, polio vaccine is 92.4% and the non-medical exemption rate is 2.5% (i.e. for philosophical or religious reasons)
- overall coverage rate for measles, mumps, rubella vaccine is 97% and the non-medical exemption rate is 2.5% (i.e. for philosophical or religious reasons)
- these data do not include coverage rates for meningococcal, pertussis, and varicella (chickenpox) vaccines, two other immunizations required under the ISPA, nor do they include other immunizations that are recommended for school-age children such as human papillomavirus, hepatitis B, or influenza vaccines
Immunization coverage rates by school
The table below shows the coverage rates for 2018 to 2019 for the following vaccines:
- diphtheria, tetanus, polio vaccine
- measles, mumps, rubella vaccine
- exemption rates in this table apply only to non-medical exemptions

Technical notes:
- Data source: Data were extracted on September 6, 2019, from Ontario’s Panorama Database, the provincial information system used for tracking immunizations.
- Inclusions: Rates include data on all students ages seven to 17 (born between 2001 to 2011) within the seven publicly-funded school boards served by Public Health Sudbury & Districts during the 2018 to 2019 school year.
- Exclusions: Private schools, alternative schools, and schools with 10 or fewer students enrolled were excluded from analysis.
- Calculation of coverage rate: Student compliance was used to estimate immunization coverage at each school, and overall, as follows:
- Coverage Compliance rate (%) = (Number of students compliant – Number of students exempt) / Number of students enrolled X 100%, where
- Compliant = the student is not overdue (i.e. is either due, eligible, or up-to-date) for the immunization at the time of the report, OR has a valid exemption.
- Exempt = the student has ANY valid exemption (i.e. for medical, non-medical, or administrative reasons).
- Coverage Compliance rate (%) = (Number of students compliant – Number of students exempt) / Number of students enrolled X 100%, where
- Calculation of exemption rate: The calculated exemption rate includes non-medical exemptions only. Students having medical or administrative exemptions are excluded, as follows:
- Exemption rate (%) = Number of students with a valid non-medical exemption / Number of students enrolled X 100%
- Limitations: The use of compliance in the calculation of coverage likely underestimates the true coverage rate by a small amount. Both students who are non-compliant and students with exemptions may be immune due to a previous illness. As well, students who obtain exemptions may have previously received doses of the vaccine in question.
