Partner sexual history
In order to protect yourself from sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, you need to know as much as possible about your partner’s sexual history. Talking to your partner about sexual health may be difficult but it is very important to do this before you have sex. If you plan this conversation with a caring and mature attitude, you can have a very helpful talk that will bring both of you closer and keep you safer.
Remember, it is never too late to have this conversation. Even if you are already sexually active, you can still prevent or reduce the risk of getting a sexually transmitted infection.
How to talk to your partner?
- Create a feeling of trust and concern.
- Remember to use good judgement and choose to share information that will be useful. You do not need to give details, just facts.
- Choose the right time.
- Your partner may need some time to think about what you have told him or her. Do not rush a reaction or a decision.
What to talk about?
- Ask if your partner has ever had unprotected sex. Find out if they were tested for an STI after having unprotected sex.
- Ask your partner if they have, or have ever had, an STI or if they have HIV. Find out the name of the STI.
- Ask if the infection was treated and if they are still at risk of transmitting it.
- Talk about your feelings and concerns with your partner.
