Online dating safety
When searching for companionship online, it is important to remember that not everyone has the same values or goals as you. Always be cautious: rely on your instincts (gut reactions), and follow these simple guidelines to avoid a bad connection.
Starting out
- Use a reputable online dating service. Most require that you be 18 or older. Read and make sure you understand the site’s privacy disclaimer statements before signing up.
- Protect your privacy. Set up an account that is anonymous. Do not list anything that could identify you, for example, your name, address, phone number, email address, workplace.
- Look at the other person’s photo. Does it really match their profile?
- Don’t believe everything you read. Allow time and more contact to reveal what this person is all about.
- Go slowly. Any person worth dating must earn your trust.
Meeting for the first time
- Tell someone you trust where you are going and when you will be back.
- Bring a friend who can discretely watch from a distance.
- Carry a cellphone and meet in a public place.
- Start with a brief meeting (for coffee or lunch). This will tell you a great deal.
- Go slowly. You have time.
- Avoid alcohol. It can affect how you make decisions.
Be safe
- You might have an increased sense of familiarity with this person because the information you have shared online, but you still do not know each other.
- Do not reveal your personal information yet. Meet a few more times.
- Do not get into a car or go home with your new date.
- If you are meeting away from your home area, book your own transportation and accommodations.
- If you have any problems, report them immediately to the dating service.
- Walk away if you feel any uneasiness, pressure, or if the person is trying to control you.
- If you feel threatened in any way, call the police (dial 911 in emergencies).
