Alcohol trends in your community

In 2019-2020, 86.5% of people in the Public Health Sudbury & Districts region, self-reported having had one or more alcoholic drinks in the past 12 months, compared to 75.8% in Ontario.1

In 2021, the age-standardized rate of emergency department (ED) visits entirely attributed to alcohol in Sudbury and districts was 706.7 visits per 100 000 population.2 This is the sixth highest rate when compared to the other health units in Ontario. Conversely, the provincial rate of ED visits attributed to alcohol is reported as 543.3 visits per 100 000 population.2

Between 2015 and 2020, heavy drinking rates have steadily increased in the Public Health Sudbury & Districts service area. In 2019-2020, Public Health Sudbury & Districts had the highest heavy drinking rate in the province of individuals 12 years of age and over at 27.9%. This contrasts with provincial and federal rates of 15.6% and 17.5% respectively.3
