Current Work Location Arrangement: Partial On-site – The position requires a combination of regular on-site and remote work. Reasons and schedules can vary, but worker attends on-site regularly (for example, each week).
Position summary
Public Health Sudbury & Districts is currently seeking two Smoke Free Ontario Act Inspectors to work in the Health Protection Division.
Reporting to the Program Manager, Health Protection Division, the Smoke-Free Ontario Act Inspector is responsible for the promotion, monitoring and enforcement of the Smoke-Free Ontario Act, 2017 (or as current) and its regulations as well as appropriate smoking bylaws throughout Public Health Sudbury & Districts’ catchment area in accordance with agency policy and applicable legislation.
Responsibilities
- Conducts inspections and investigation of premises affected by applicable tobacco and electronic cigarette legislation.
- Conducts surveillance, compliance, and enforcement checks of Smoke Free Ontario Act vendors as appropriate to ensure compliance with applicable tobacco and electronic cigarette legislation.
- Develops and provides education and training appropriate to the legislation to tobacco vendors, electronic cigarette vendors, business owners, and the public as appropriate.
- Provides information and interpretation of the legislation to officials, businesses, and the general public.
- Enforces all aspects of applicable tobacco and electronic cigarette legislation including the issuance of appropriate charges, provincial offences notices, information, and summons as well as attending in court as expert witness and/or prosecutor as appropriate.
- Prepares appropriate documentation related to the enforcement of tobacco and electronic cigarette legislation.
Requirements
- Successful completion of either:
- The Law Enforcement Program from a community college or equivalent; or
- Bachelor of Applied Science in Environmental Health or equivalent with CIPHI certification or the ability to take the next scheduled CIPHI Board of Certification Exams.
- Minimum of three years experience in law and enforcement or related experience in Public Health Inspection.
- Advanced oral and written proficiency in French is required for 1 position.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated initiative, problem solving and interpersonal skills and leadership abilities.
- Demonstrated ability to work in an interdisciplinary team environment.
- Demonstrated ability related to the use of computers and basic computer programs in a Windows environment.
- Ability to work flexible hours.
- Ability to work occasional weekends and evenings to meet demands of the position.
- Occasional overnight travel will be required.
- Maintains current Ontario driver’s license and has access to a reliable vehicle with agency required insurance to fulfill position requirements.
- Satisfactory police reference check in accordance with agency policy.
- Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
